Dell external USB DVDRW drive not working

What are the things that decide the write/read speed? DVD and sata cable? does the usb port and connected device also have something to do with it?

I think it has an SATA connector. Can I use an SATA to USB adapter and just plug it in my Laptop/desktop and burn/read cd's?

The portable drives do not. (Last link in my post #6).They can run from only a USB port. Read/Write speeds are determined by the optical drive itself.  USB 2 and SATA are faster than the DVD drive.

For the price of the enclosure you could get a new portable USB drive. Note the length of the cable. You may need to purchase a longer one if necessary.
