Our goals at Helping Hand Worldwide are two-fold: First, to alleviate hunger thus improving the quality of life for our recipients by addressing the physiological need for a balanced diet. Secondly, to build stronger communities by addressing social isolation and other psychological needs for fellowship from people who share the same challenges. The Mobile Food Pantry Program enables us to meet our goal of alleviating hunger as we deliver fresh and nutritious food directly to 31low-income neighborhoods. Food is kept cold, transported safely and directly from the store seven days per week to our distribution sites. Our “in community" model is successful due to our commitment to food distribution every week at the locations we service. Other similar organizations offer recipients only one visit to their food pantry per month. HHWW's multi-site distribution program alleviates the challenge people with limited transportation to a traditional food bank or warehouse. Our mobile food distribution is particularly beneficial for those who are elderly, ill or disabled. Equally important to providing balanced nutrition is our goal to facilitate the involvement of both individuals and families in the communities to look after each other, support one another and build a brighter future. Community members are empowered to bring out the best in each other while our enthusiastic volunteers make everyone feel welcome and respected. Mothers who cannot afford to hire babysitters while they seek out a food pantry are welcome to bring their children and babies to our distribution sites. In one noteworthy example, a group of Mothers at Camp Pendleton have formed a unique bond built around our distribution days. These women each have multiple young children and babies. In a show of support for each other, they take turns watching all the children while the other Moms attend our food site distribution. Each week they take the “babysitter" a large box of our fresh meat, fruit, vegetables, eggs and other items she needs. It is truly heartwarming to see!Helping Hand Worldwide remains committed to our “in community" food distribution model seven days per week. We served 46,000 recipients in 2016, indicating that our Mobile Food Pantry is a successful method to meet our goals of alleviating hunger and building strong communities.

Our Mobile Food Pantry distributes fresh, healthy food free of charge to 30 distribution sites in low-income communities throughout Orange County. Each morning we pick up In Kind donations of fresh, nutritious food from our grocery retailers. Our two refrigerated delivery trucks keep food at a safe temperature meeting OC Health Dept. guidelines. High quality meats, fresh fruits and vegetables, eggs, whole grains, chicken, fish and low-fat dairy products are delivered to these communities, usually within hours of donation. Immediately upon arrival at our distribution locations, our volunteers place the food on longtables much like an outdoor Farmer’s Market. Recipients are able to “shop” for the food their families need and enjoy the most. We also distribute basic necessities such as hygiene supplies and something special too, fresh flowers and plants. We partner with 34 retailers who donate a combined total of$1,000,000 worth of In Kind donations each year in a joint effort to alleviate hunger in our own neighborhoods.

Helping Hand Worldwide operates its largest distribution program for the military on Camp PendletonMarine Base, located alongside the Pacific Ocean in Southern California. We are one of the very few non-profit organizations supplying fresh food for active duty, young families and veterans from Camp Pendleton on a weekly basis. Each week we obtain, deliver and distribute 30,000 pounds of nutritious food including fruit, vegetables, meats, fish, chicken and cheese, eggs and whole grains. Since the majority of the food delivered is perishable, the program at Camp Pendleton requires military precision to mobilize volunteers, set up tables and organize the large quantities of food. We also provide hygiene products and much needed diapers and baby products. Partnering with military personnel and volunteers from the base, our Mobile Food Pantry services up to 5,000 people in a friendly yet efficient manner ensuring long lines ofrecipients move quickly.

Our Mobile Food Pantry provides us with an opportunity to assist the most vulnerable members of society with food insecurity. HHWW recipients include: families with children suffering from malnutrition; the poor and working poor; the disabled and senior citizens; enlisted servicemen and women struggling with basic needs; and homeless veterans.Our key strategies for success:• Helping Hand Worldwide operates with a staff of 250 volunteers. our Executive Director and 5 part-time employees. Our large pool of well trained volunteers account for 98% of the staff ensuring low cost of operation. Volunteers are the backbone of our Mobile Food Pantry deliveries. They assist our truck drivers with daily food pick- up, packing our delivery trucks, distributing the food and cleaning the truck for the next day. Our food site volunteers make certain food is distributed fairly and equitably. They are also entrusted with the responsibility to elevate the overall quality of life for our recipients. • We select our volunteer Supervisors by choosing people who are compassionate, hard-working and enthusiastic. Our model attracts long-term volunteers including: stay-at-home Moms, retired school administrators, students, the under-employed and seniors who wish to give back to their communities. As a result, volunteers are qualified to empathize with our recipients while maintaining a professional environment.• HHWW works closely with 45 Partnerships/Alliances which believe in our mission and provide support on many levels. With the help of our 34 retailers, we distributed 6,000,000 lbs. of food and supplies in 2016, with a retail value of $7,000,000! We depend on their generosity each year for our In Kind donations.• Our continued success is directly linked to our philosophy of delivering fresh, healthy food directly to impoverished communities. This unique process of food distribution has many benefits for our recipients particularly those who are confined to home or unable to drive. Since 2009, our recipients have increased from 500 per month to 36,000 today. Continuing high rates of unemployment are increasing the numbers of individuals using our food distribution sites each month. In 2016, we distributed 16,500 pounds of food, hygiene products and other necessities daily.• Our approach to food distribution is based on an extensive network of partnerships with other local organizations. We are available to receive In Kind donations from our corporate retailers 24 hours a day and on holidays. We oversee support services for other non- profits and share our In Kind donations resulting in a larger and stronger base of support for those in need of assistance. We work side-by-side with many outreach organizations in our community which have limited office and food warehouse hours. Our program receives and distributes food on days and hours that are most beneficial for our communities.

Our savings became a necessity to maintain our basic household needs. Unfortunately as we quickly learned the cost of living here in camp Pendleton/ California is so much more than the other bases we have lived at, but our pay is the same no matter where we live. During my pregnancy I was diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes requiring a special diet, one of our children was also diagnosed as underweight and malnourished. She required a change of diet that we could NOT afford. The Helping Hand Worldwide food distribution was a life changer for our family! It provided our family with the only way possible we could maintain our required diet. We received fresh fruits and vegetables, milk, eggs, breads and meats even some household items such as toothpaste and laundry detergents! I was able to regulate my blood sugar levels due to a healthy diet. Our daughter started gaining a healthy weight, and our family was provided with much needed well rounded healthy meals. Our baby was born healthy!There are no words or way that our family can express how grateful we are for these giveaways. It has impacted our lives both emotionally and physically and spiritually.
