In Germany, in the Black Forest mountain region, the Hovawart dog-breed came into existence, but twice during its history, that dog-breed was on the verge of survival. Hovawart is an old German dog-breed, whose name could be literally translated and interpreted as the guardian of courtyard. That dog is mid-sized, lively and placid in its nature. It is also pretty reserved towards strangers, but very attached to the family. This dog-breed originated from the Black Forest mountain region, and its existence was for the first time mentioned in the medieval records. The first, written document about these dogs dating from 1210. In the oldest, preserved legal code of medieval Germany (dating from 1274) the Hovawart dogs were mentioned, since certain recoupment and penalty were prescribed, in case of its theft or deliberate killing. Considerably later, in 1473, Heinrich Misinger described these dogs in details, and wrote that Hovawart dog-breed was one of five noble races in Germany. According to his description, these dogs were used as guardians of courtyard and farm houses. In the Middle Ages and later on, the number of these dogs has been gradually reducing, so that by the end of the 19th century, this dog-breed found itself on the verge of survival, as it was already mentioned.
