As I prepare to join you all this Tuesday, June 18, at the Pharma Brand the Age of AI, by Propeller Events and the Ontario Pharmaceutical Marketing Association Summer Party that follows, I wanted to reflect on my take on AI, given its rapid growth over the last 18 months. 1) Productivity ChatGPT has established itself as the logical evolution of the digital tools at our disposal, becoming both our personal assistant and an extension of our office tools, resulting in improved productivity. Its popularity has made it the number-one choice for many of us. We have learned how to interact with it effectively, bringing back the art of the brief (yes, what a great idea!)—context, parameters to consider, target audience, and expected results, among other things—to guide it for the best outcomes. Some of us even nickname ChatGPT, reflecting our inclination to humanize it. 2) Proprietary We have also come to understand the ethical issues surrounding AI usage, such as intellectual property protection and the risks of misuse like fraudulent use of our images or voices, or as a tool for spreading news—true or false. It is therefore crucial to understand that data quality, protection, and curation will be the cornerstone of the most effective AI systems. In case you missed the announcement from Canada’s Drug Agency (formerly CADTH) today: “Effective immediately, we are expanding our pilot process for rolling drug reimbursement reviews. Following are the top 10 mistakes I made: 𝟏- 𝐍𝐨 𝐉𝐨𝐛 𝐒𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐲: I was just applying in the dark without a strategy. 𝟐- 𝐍𝐨 𝐍𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠: I didn't put in any time to build relationships. 𝟑- 𝐍𝐨𝐭 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐑𝐞𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐬: I did not know 80% of jobs are found and secured through someone. 𝟒- 𝐍𝐨𝐭 𝐓𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐌𝐲 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐞: I sent the same vanilla resume to every place. 𝟓- 𝐍𝐨𝐭 𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐋𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐞𝐝𝐈𝐧 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐥𝐲: I didn't optimize my profile or participate in the community. 𝟔- 𝐍𝐨𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐞𝐬: This includes applications without necessarily knowing the culture or values of the companies in question. 𝟕- 𝐋𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐨𝐟 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐥𝐞𝐝𝐠𝐞 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐂𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐣𝐨𝐛 𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞: I was unprepared for how the hiring processes would go, and the expectations were different. 𝟖- 𝐍𝐨𝐭 𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐨𝐟𝐭 𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐬: I was so focused on technical skills that leadership and communication took a backseat. 𝟗-𝐒𝐤𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐈𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰𝐬: Never called people and asked for advice. 𝟏𝟎-𝐍𝐨𝐭 𝐈𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: Never did courses/certifications that could make me stand apart from the crowd. As healthcare systems in Europe and Canada face rising costs, one critical area demanding urgent attention is the affordability of medications. Both regions are contending with the escalating prices of essential drugs, putting strain on national budgets and patients alike. In Canada, public drug program spending reached $17.2 billion in 2022, a 6.4% increase from the previous year. Much of this spending is driven by high-cost biologic drugs and new treatments such as Trikafta for cystic fibrosis, contributing to 25% of total growth in public drug expenditure. Canadians are also facing rising costs for diabetes treatments like Ozempic, with expenditures nearly doubling from $265 million in 2021 to $434 million in 2022 (Canadian Institute for Health Information, 2023; WHO, 2023). In Europe, medication affordability is a pressing issue, with out-of-pocket payments pushing 1% to 20% of households into poverty in several countries. A 2023 WHO report highlights the financial hardship caused by high medicine prices, even in some of Europe’s wealthiest nations (WHO, 2023). The European Commission is working to revise pharmaceutical legislation to boost competition and improve cost-effectiveness, particularly for high-cost treatments like cancer care (European Commission, 2022). In both Europe and Canada, rising healthcare costs are a challenge. A key driver of medication pricing lies in the distribution and dispensation costs, which account for 20-25% of the final price of medicines. Tackling these hidden costs can significantly improve affordability for patients. Key findings from recent reports: In Europe, distribution and retail pharmacy markups can range from 10% to 50%, depending on the country and medication type. For example, in Germany, wholesale markups add around 3-5%, while pharmacies apply an additional 8-10% markup. (European Commission Healthcare Reports, 2023) In Canada, dispensing fees vary widely, with Ontario charging an average of CAD 8.83 per prescription, while in Alberta, fees can exceed CAD 12. (Canadian Institute for Health Information, 2022) Centralised dispensing models, like those used in the UK’s NHS, have demonstrated potential savings of up to 30% on dispensation costs while maintaining high levels of patient satisfaction. (NHS Improvement, 2021) Digital innovations, such as automated pharmaceutical distribution systems in Sweden and Denmark, have reduced logistical costs by 15-20%, translating into more affordable medicines for the public sector. (Nordic Council of Ministers, 2023) By reducing these costs, we can directly impact the affordability of medicines—potential savings of 10-15% per prescription could be realised across European and Canadian markets.
