The software also features a number of really nice improvements. First, the Huawei Watch GT 5 is the first Huawei device to run its new Harmony OS 5 software. The new operating system runs smoother, and the user interface animations are also improved. Most notable are the new fitness features, which offer a much better experience than the previous generation Watch.
The specifications are also nearly identical under the hood, with the Watch GT 5 only sporting an upgraded sensor and positioning hardware and now also feature built-in Wi-Fi connectivity. The upgraded sensor is paired with Huawei’s new TruSense System, the company’s health-tracking technology that monitors more than 60 health and fitness indicators, including emotional well-being.
Huawei recently launched its new range of wearables, which include the new Watch 5 Series, a watch designed to resemble a traditional timepiece but with all the intelligence you could want from a smart wearable. The Watch GT 5 looks almost identical to the Watch GT 4 from last year but with one noticeable aesthetic difference: a blue colour scheme over last year’s green. It’s also marginally thinner than last year’s model, but more importantly, the Watch GT 5 features a stainless steel body and back, whereas the GT 4 had a plastic back cover and a stainless steel front.
One of the other new features on the Watch GT 5 is Emotional Wellbeing. This app uses all the sensor data collected by the watch and an algorithm to determine your emotional well-being. The watch will display when it detects various emotional states, and it keeps track of this data so that you can monitor your emotional states. It’s been accurate at times with how I feel, but it’s not been a 100% hit rate.
The Huawei Watch GT 5 is an impressive all-rounder smartwatch with a great set of features to boot. Out of all the smartwatches I’ve tested, this one also has the longest battery life by far. On average, the battery will last you about a week on a single charge, but you can stretch this up to 14 days if you don’t use the always-on display or use the GPS and fitness features regularly. The Watch GT 5 also works with both iOS and Android devices; you just need to install the Huawei Health app to make it work. The app allows you to manage every aspect of your watch and you can browse the hundreds of free and paid-for watch faces to make your Watch GT 5 your own.
One of my favourite new features in this department is the offline maps feature. This allows you to download maps for the region you are in that give you street-level views. There is also a global map to give you a wider view should you need to find yourself on a deserted island. You can use these offline maps during an activity like running, cycling, or hiking. Once you start the activity on your watch, you’ll be able to view a map of the area you are in – provided it’s downloaded, of course. This allows you to find a new route when you are out on a run or cycle, or you can easily track back your route should you be in the bush hiking. This is an incredibly useful feature that works even when your phone is not connected to the watch.
When it comes to notifications, the Watch GT 5 also has another trick up its sleeve. You can now reply to messages like WhatsApp with the new onscreen keyboard. I certainly would not compose long messages, but for the times you need to reply to something other than OK on a message, the keyboard will do the trick just fine.
I’ll admit, I never saw the need for a smartwatch until I started using one about a year ago. Before then, I used a Garmin fitness watch only when I went mountain biking, as it did not do much else other than fitness-related health and location tracking. In fact, I stopped wearing a regular watch many years before that. Now, I feel lost without my smart timepiece always on my wrist. The main appeal for me is the health data. Keeping an eye on my heart rate has become a bit of a habit, and it helps me immensely with fitness training… or, shall I say, casual cycling. Then there’s the real value in tracking your sleep data, and if you want to gamify a healthy lifestyle, the step counter is always fun to track.
If you currently own a Watch GT 4, the updates may not be compelling enough to justify the investment. However, if you are a new smart watch user, this is certainly one to check out, even if you are an iPhone user. The Huawei Watch GT 5 offers a solid set of features in a beautifully designed product. There are two colour options to choose from, blue and black and you can buy a variety of replacement straps to suit any other style.
While the Watch GT5 offers a lot of functionality as is, you can also download apps for it. Sadly, the library only has a few big apps, and this is really my only gripe with this watch. I would love to see more apps that offer a variety of additional functions for the Watch GT 5. As it stands out of the apps available, I find the For Spotify Controller to be the most useful, this app allows me to control my music from my watch while I am out on a cycle. I can also browse my playlists and change the device I am listening on.

When it comes to fitness, there are many sports you can track with your Huawei Watch GT 5 but most of them are hidden when you first use the watch. You’ll need to find the complete list under the Custom setting in the Workout screen. There is a large plus button to add a new sport to track. This is also where you’ll find the esport tracking feature. Yup, you can track your fitness indicators while you game, neat!
Huawei’s Watch GT 5 is a really solid device and it offers a boatload of great features for sports and fitness enthusiasts. It is also compatible with popular apps like Strava, so you can ensure your exercises are always tracked with GPS and other metrics embedded.
