The days of the high refresh rate monitor market being dominated by TN (Twisted Nematic) panels are long gone. The Acer XF243Y P (XF243Y Pbmiiprx) and XF273 S (XF273 Sbmiiprx) of the Nitro XF3 series continue the push away from this, coming in IPS (In-Plane Switching) flavour with a nod towards strong colour performance. The monitors offer a simple homely aesthetic, with circular stand base, silver-coloured slender stand neck and textured matte plastic bottom bezel. The top and side bezels are dual-stage, including a slim panel border that’s flush with the rest of the screen. Plus a slim hard plastic outer component. The OSD (On Screen Display) is controlled by pressable buttons and a joystick at the rear of the monitor, running down the bottom of the right side as viewed from in front.

The monitors use a 23.8″ (XF24) and 27″ (XF27) IPS-type panel with 1920 x 1080 (Full HD) resolution and support for a 165Hz refresh rate (144Hz + internal overclock). Adaptive-Sync is supported to take care of tearing and stuttering from frame and refresh rate mismatches. This includes AMD FreeSync Premium with a 48 – 165Hz VRR range plus LFC. A matte screen surface is employed, whilst a 1000:1 static contrast ratio and 178°/178° horizontal/vertical viewing angles are specified. 8-bit colour is supported and a WLED backlight is used, offering a 250 cd/m² typical maximum luminance and 99% sRGB colour gamut coverage. The monitors offer Low Blue Light (LBL) settings and include a blue light peak shifted to less energetic wavelengths to help aid viewing comfort. The monitors respond to HDR10 content but fall short of any specific VESA DisplayHDR standard – so this is only very rudimentary HDR support. A 2ms (or ‘up to 0.5ms’) grey to grey response time is specified, but you shouldn’t put much weight on these figures. The included stand offers tilt and height adjustment and can be removed to reveal 100 x 100mm VESA holes. The ports face downwards and include DP 1.2a, 2 HDMI 2.0 ports and a 3.5mm headphone jack. 2 x 2W speakers are also included, for basic sound output.
