Clients will initially be fully assessed by the Physiotherapist to determine the key impairments affecting their function. This may take a number of sessions depending on the complexity of the client’s issues. During these sessions the goals of Physiotherapy management will be discussed in detail to ensure a client centred approach.

The aim of Neurological Physiotherapy is to enable individuals with neurological injuries/disease to function as effectively as they can in everyday life. Therapists are trained in the analysis of ‘normal movement’. This involves understanding normal movement patterns, and how the biomechanics of the body work. If normal patterns are impaired, Neurological Physiotherapists can use a variety of techniques to facilitate better efficiency of movement.

Following assessment, the Physiotherapist will formulate a management plan to best target the client’s impairments. This may include set up of home or community exercise programs (e.g. gym and hydrotherapy), carer training, 1:1 sessions for pain management techniques and facilitation of normal patterns of movement, education and referral to other health professionals as required.

Due to the complexities of the central nervous system, people with neurological conditions can have a variety of impairments. These may include muscle tightness or spasm, weakness, tremors, poor balance, reduced coordination, and altered sensation. These symptoms can lead to problems with everyday activities such as walking, getting dressed and eating (to name a few).
