𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐖𝐡𝐨 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐅𝐔𝐉𝐈𝐅𝐈𝐋𝐌 From 1934, when it was established as Fuji Photo Film in Tokyo, Japan, taking over the photographic film operations of Daicel, to today where it is one of the world’s key players in medical imaging and diagnostics equipment, here is a look at CEOs of #FUJIFILM from inception to today: 1. Shuichi Asano (1934-1943) As the first CEO, Asano established Fuji as Japan’s first domestic manufacturer of positive films for motion pictures and other photosensitive materials. He also oversaw the launch of independently developed products including medical X-ray films. 2. Sakae Haruki (1943-1960) Under Haruki’s leadership, Fuji strengthened its market position as a manufacturer of photosensitive materials and made its first camera in 1948. Fuji also introduced its color film in the same year. The company also carried out a company-wide campaign to ensure strict quality control for all its products. 3. Setsutaro Koayashi (1960 - 1971) Koayashi took multiple initiatives to address the growing market for color photography. Fuji also established Fuji Xero Co. as a joint venture with Xerox and launched its first domestically manufactured paper copier. The company also officially entered the NA and EU markets. 4. Kusuo Hirata (1971-1980) During Hirata's time, Fuji focused on developing small, lightweight, easy-to-use cameras. The company also started expanding into medical devices and materials business. 5. Minoru Onishi (1980 2003) Under Onishi's leadership, Fuji pursued a strategy of globalization while facing significant competition from its main rival, Kodak. Fuji also made substantial investments and shifted toward digitizing its products, including introducing one of the world's first fully digital cameras in 1988. Additionally, the company increased its stake in Fuji Xerox making it a subsidiary in 2001. 6. Shigetaka Komori (2003-2021) Komori is credited with transforming Fujifilm during a critical period when the traditional film market collapsed due to digital photography, followed by a decline in digital camera sales because of the introduction of smartphones. Under his leadership, he implemented a bold strategy to diversify into healthcare, high-functional materials, and document solutions ensuring the company's survival and growth. Acquisition of Toyama, Sonosite, and Hitachi are notable examples of this. This strategic pivot led to a significant increase in Fujifilm’s market cap, while its competitor Kodak filed for bankruptcy during the same period. Komori detailed this transformation in his book “Innovating Out of Crisis - How Fujifilm Survived (and Thrived) As Its Core Business Was Vanishing”. 7. Teiichi Goto (2021-present) Goto has continued Fujifilm's expansion into the healthcare industry. Under his leadership, the company has sustained investments in medical imaging and biopharma turning healthcare into FUJIFILM’s largest division and solidifying its #transformation.
